Working with Daniela Belmondo has been a pleasure. It’s not everyday that you get to work with a client who not only is willing to give you complete creative freedom, but is also willing to explore different avenues. Since the launch of Belmondo Skin Care, both Daniela and I have received a lot of great feedback, not only on how great the product is, but also in regards to the design, labels, and packaging. Most recently, the product appeared in Wallpaper Magazine’s July 2011 issue. I was humbly honored to be mentioned in the article. It’s not everyday that you are mentioned in a prestigious magazine such as Wallpaper. Among other mentions, Belmondo has also recently appeared in Monocle Magazine as well as reputable design blogs including Lovely Package , and the Dieline.

Once again, I had the pleasure to get involved with The Cheaper Show and support the art community. It’s always a joy to be able to donate your time to an event like this. It’s no secret that this show has now become a massive one-night art event in which all of the work is sold at an affordable price. 200 artists were selected from over 1200 submissions from 40+ countries. Chosen artists represented 15 different countries including Australia, Barbados, Canada, Chile, Italy, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Japan, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, UK, and USA. As expected, the show now attracts a ton of media and crowds of up to 7,000+. Believe me, it’s awesome!
Every year Pedalheads offers various multi-level leisure programs designed to teach kids how to ride a bike from training wheels to trails. Most recently, Pedalheads has expanded their programs and services from the Lower Mainland to Calgary all the way to Toronto. With this in mind, Pedalheads wanted to step-up their brand image, and gradually build brand consistency. By using their logo’s existing illustration, we took the illustration further, enlarged it and applied it to various design components for the viewer to better appreciate the sense of fun, and adventure offered by the program. To further support the idea of fun and adventure, an active and lively color palate was used. A t-shirt design marking Pedalhead’s 25 years in business was also created for this year’s season.

Ever since I graduated in April of 2008, I have always made an effort to attend grad shows from design programs offered at various colleges and universities around town. For the most part, I try to keep in touch with faculty from the school I attended, as it reminds me of where I came from and gives me a chance to continue to be involved, catching up with those who taught me. Visiting other schools also gives me a change to check out new, young talent, and meet other industry creatives from local studios who are also there to support the shows. It’s always nice to find unexpected surprises, and well executed work from design students. Here are a few shots from Emily Carr’s Grad Exhibition, showcasing Fabrica, designed by Alvin Kwan & Collator designed by Vince Lo

Well, as you may have noticed, I recently launched this new website earlier this year—version 3.0. I felt that I needed something more dynamic, where I could easily update content, which was something that the other two versions were lacking. I have always felt that with each web redesign, the business card must change as well to reflect the new design of the site, partly because it enables me to build consistency as a brand. Whenever I offer my card to someone, I feel they are getting a little introduction or preview of what to expect when they visit the website for the first time. The card is simple, to the point, and utilizes a similar neutral grey as the site which I felt connected the two together.

A good part of the end of 2010 and Early 2011 was spent getting to know Rocanini, one of our “cool” clients. It was quite the experience learning about the ‘art of making coffee’. Although I can’t call myself an expert, or a coffee connoisseur, I can say that I now know a little more about coffee than I ever did before. After spending some time at Rocanini’s local roastery, I now have a higher appreciation for freshly roasted coffee. Forget Starbucks, and other big coffee chains. Chances are, you’re drinking stuff that was roasted months ago, actually lowering the quality of a good cup of coffee. Support the small independent guys instead who really put a lot of care and time into making your cup of coffee.

Oguz Tekstil is a Turkish company operating in the fashion industry as a fabric mill for over 35 years. In an effort to target designers, fabric buyers, and merchants of various fashion companies located within New York and other US markets, Oguz needed to revisit their identity and other marketing collateral in order to compete among other Turkish companies within its market. I was commissioned by Oguz to redesign their existing logo involving some strict guidelines. The redesign needed to utilize their existing monogram symbol, while giving the wordmark a fresh updated look. As a result, a more proportionally modern, and professional identity was developed and one that focused more on the name “Oguz”. The new identity was then applied to fabric sample hangers, and to their SP/SU 2012 exhibition booth being presented at their first textile trade show in New York. For Oguz, these two components served as their main vehicle of marketing their products while creating a first impression among their competitors.

Fourwear is a sport and streetwear shop based out of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Targeting mainly a young, urban market who are attracted to boarding sports and boarding gear. Fourwear needed to update their brand image in order to appeal to their audience’s taste and lifestyle. With this in mind, we created a skate-shop brand that is perceived as “cool and trendy”. Illustrations would change from season to season incorporating new trends and themes to keep the brand fresh. By using a bold treatment and a bright color palette, we created a brand label that both boarding sport aficionados and street-ware/casual hipsters could feel confident about—as one they can trust as their go-to boarding shop.

Belmondo is Italian for “beautiful world.” Created by Daniela Belmondo, a local esthetician who believes that beautiful skin comes from products derived from the earth’s pure and restorative ingredients. Belmondo organic skin care is designed around the daily rituals of caring for yourself. Hand-crafted and formulated in small batches locally, Belmondo products are carefully formulated with the desire to share the incredible natural properties of olive oil, sourced from Italy. In the same way Belmondo took such care in putting together the ingredients of their products, they also wanted to demonstrate the same care for the labeling of their products. Working closely with Daniela, a custom hand-rendered type treatment was created to reflect the hand-crafted nature of the products.

The Party Pass was founded as a new way to connect students and young professionals with the city’s best restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. With the goal to give its costumers a new way to eat, drink, and celebrate in the city, the Party Pass program allowed people to enjoy exclusive deals and privileges when they presented their pass to the city’s participating venues. We created a website that would take Party Pass’ traditional way of printing coupon books to a new online level where exclusive deals would be showcased based on categories. A more sustainable solution was created in fresh, young and cool manner to capture the attention of Vancouver and Victoria’s party people.

Modern Karibou is a Canadian online design and lifestyle shop. Modern Karibou highlights the creations of established and emerging designers and artists from around the world, and champions and celebrates home-grown, innovative talent. In an effort to promote their online products at design shows and home decor shows around Canada, Modern Karibou came to us to develop a promotional poster/flyer—to briefly showcase the variety of products which could be found on their online shop. We created something bold and typographically driven in order to capture the attention of their costumer base, which primarily consists of designers and design-savvy professionals in various fields and disciplines.
